Rock Hall Decoy Festival

Rock Hall Decoy Festival

At the 1st Annual Rock Hall Decoy Show & Cruise In at Historic Rock Hall Bulkhead we will celebrate and honor the Rock Hall School of Master Carvers : Mr. Johnny Glenn, August Heinefield and Roger Urie. This group of gentlemen would be and are at the the top of the most prolific and revered decoy makers in the business. Lucky gunners and collectors have enjoyed these masterpieces for over one hundred years.

The Glenn family migrated to Chesapeake Bay country in the 17th century. There were four Glenn families in Kent County in the first U.S. Census taken in 1790. John Bennett Glenn ("Mr. Johnny") was born on March 6, 1872 on the family farm in Piney Neck known as Decoy Farm, named so for his decoy production. The Rock Hall School's origins date back to 1916 when Mr. Johnny began making decoys for himself. Soon word would spread of the high quality and authenticity of Mr. Johnny's decoys. In the 1920's and 1930's Mr. Johnny's production was in high gear and supplied thousands of decoys to gunners and gun clubs up and down the Chesapeake Bay. Production business was so swift, that around 1929 Mr. Johnny employed August George Heinefield who was a local carpenter at the time. And that is how the Rock Hall School of Master Carvers was born.
